Here be Dragons

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

This weekend has been La Mercé the fiesta mayor of Barcelona City. Loads of free entertainment throughout the city for 3/4 days. It kicked of in front of the City Hall (the Ayuntamiento) on Friday night with a procession of “devils” dancing very much like something out of “Where the Wild Things Are” [...]

Noche de San Juan and wooden fridges

Monday, June 25th, 2007

23rd June was the midsummer fiesta in Barcelona (and presumably in the rest of Spain, but it’s a big one here).  Saturday night saw fireworks spectaculars at the beach and all night verbanas with petardos until dawn.  We spent the night down at the beach last year with Isabel’s brother, Juan and his Italian/Canadian friend [...]

Barcelona Eixample Dreta Festa Major

Sunday, May 20th, 2007

This weekend has been the Festa Major (Fiesta Mayor) of the Eixample Dreta where we live. Our street, C/Girona, was closed to traffic along much of its length to allow market stalls and entertainment stands to be set up. The intention was to take the fiesta back to the period when the Eixample [...]

Robert Fripp - Palau de la Musica

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

We went to the Palau de la Música on Thursday night to see Robert Fripp and the League of Crafty guitarists.  This concert was part of the 18th annual Guitar Festival that is held in April in Barcelona.  Last year we saw a great performance from John Williams at the Petit Palau.  Sadly, the hall [...]

MACBA

Sunday, March 4th, 2007

We spent Saturday afternoon at the Contemporary Art Museum in Barcelona (MACBA). We mainly went to see the “The Killing Machine” exhibit from Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, but it was also our first time there so we ploughed through the other exhibits as well. The Killing Machine exhibits were great - [...]

Carnaval

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

We had planned to go to the carnaval in Sitges today, but the weather is so awful.  It’s been raining all day, so we’ve just stayed in - we’re planning to go tomorrow if the rain lifts.  Isabel has spent the afternoon updating the content of our main website Sweet Home Barcelona with the latest [...]

La Bisbal D’Empordá

Monday, February 5th, 2007

We needed to get some doors for our flat renovations, so on Saturday we decided (on Ester’s recommendation) to go out past Gerona to a small Catalan town called La Bisbal D’Empordá.  We’ve been there before when it was Isabel’s birthday last year and we stayed in the rather posh hotel Castell d’Empordá - which [...]

New streets added

Friday, January 19th, 2007

I’ve added the first couple of streets to our list of Barcelona streets.  These are: C/Caspe and C/Gerona.  I chose these to start with because they are the streets that we have lived in.

Notes in Spanish

Wednesday, January 17th, 2007

I just found this very well done Spanish language website Notes In Spanish. Run by Marina and Ben, it has a lot of useful sources and plenty of idioms to practise. They also have a link to a very useful grammar website from Bowdoin College in Maine, USA.
